Date Dice NYC, operated by Matt Brady ("we", "our", or "the app"), helps you discover date ideas in New York City. We take your privacy seriously and designed the app to collect as little data as possible.
This policy applies to the Date Dice NYC iOS app and the website at datedicenyc.com. By using the app, you agree to the practices described below.
We only collect data when you explicitly grant permission. Each type of access is opt-in and can be revoked at any time in your device settings.
Location (approximate). When you grant permission, we use your approximate location to find nearby venues and show local weather. Your coordinates are rounded to three decimal places (~111 meters of precision) before leaving your device. We do not store or log your location on our servers.
Search preferences. Your selected filters - including category, vibe, budget, neighborhood, cuisine, dietary restrictions, activity type, duration, and time of day - are sent to our server to generate personalized suggestions. These are not stored after the request completes.
Device motion (iOS only). The app reads accelerometer data locally to detect shake gestures for the shake-to-roll feature. This data is processed entirely on your device and never transmitted.
Network connectivity (iOS only). The app monitors your device's network status locally to detect when you are offline. This prevents unnecessary API requests (and associated costs) when there is no internet connection. Network status is checked entirely on your device using Apple's Network framework and is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.
Calendar access (iOS only). If you choose to add a date to your calendar, we request calendar permission. The app creates a single calendar event with the venue name, a time-appropriate title (such as "Brunch Date" or "Date Night"), and a duration you select. It never reads, modifies, or deletes existing calendar entries.
Notifications (iOS only). If you grant permission, Date Dice sends local notifications to remind you about upcoming dates (two hours before your scheduled time) and to prompt you to leave a star rating the following morning. These notifications are scheduled entirely on your device and are not sent through any external push notification service. No notification data is transmitted to our servers. You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.
Date Dice offers an optional tip jar that uses Apple's StoreKit framework. All purchases are processed entirely by Apple through your Apple ID. We do not receive, store, or have access to any payment information, billing details, or Apple ID credentials. Purchase history is managed by Apple and subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. Tips are non-refundable and do not unlock additional features.

Date Dice uses the following third-party services:
Date Dice may suggest venues and include links to third-party booking platforms (such as Resy, OpenTable, Eventbrite, and others). These sites have their own privacy policies that we do not control. We encourage you to review their policies before providing any personal information.
To prevent abuse, our server counts requests per IP address using Upstash Redis. These counters are stored for 60 seconds and then automatically deleted. IP addresses are not associated with any other data and are not used for identification or tracking.
All network communication between the app and our servers uses HTTPS encryption (TLS). Our server enforces HSTS, CORS restrictions, and security headers to protect against common web attacks. Your API key and server credentials are stored securely on the server and are never exposed to client devices.
We do not retain any personal data on our servers. Rate-limit records expire within 60 seconds. All user-generated data (history, favorites, preferences) lives on your device and can be deleted by clearing app data in Settings or by uninstalling the app.
Because Date Dice does not collect personal data on our servers and does not create user accounts, there is no personal data for us to access, correct, or delete on your behalf. All data is stored locally on your device and can be cleared at any time from the app's Settings screen or by uninstalling the app.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or California, you have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA. Since we do not collect, store, or process personal data on our servers, these rights are inherently satisfied. If you have questions, please contact us.
Date Dice is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to address the issue.
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
